“Latvia at a Crossroads: The Centenary of the Latvian State” is an interdisciplinary conference focusing on the multiple contexts of Latvia during the centenary year of the nation’s independence from the Russian Empire. It brings together researchers from across Europe and North America and from a variety of different disciplines to facilitate discussion of the social, political, economic and cultural context of Latvia. The network of scholars established by this event will represent the forefront of Latvian studies. Twenty-three papers will be delivered in seven thematic panels designed to facilitate cross-disciplinary discussion. Papers have been chosen for this conference because of their pertinence and as cutting-edge research in the field.

The conference took place at the Institute for Russian and Eurasian Studies, home to the editorial office of the Journal of Baltic Studies.

The conference began with opening remarks by H.E. Mr. Marģers Krams, Latvian Ambassador to Sweden.

Latvia at a Crossroads is funded by Riksbankens Jubileumsfond, IRES, the Uppsala Forum on Democracy, Peace and Justice, and the British Association for Slavonic & East European Studies.

The Institute for Russian and Eurasian Studies, Uppsala University and the British Association for Slavonic and East European Studies hosted a two-day conference at Uppsala University in September 2018 with the theme ‘Regimes and Societies in Conflict: Eastern Europe and Russia since 1956’. Over the last 60 years Eastern Europe and Russia have been the scene of immense political, social and cultural upheaval. This conference provides the opportunity to reflect on the changes in the region that have led from Stalinist dictatorships to the very varied polities of contemporary Eastern Europe and Russia.

In recent years, Russia has played an increasingly active and assertive role in world politics. Prominent cases include Russia’s takeover of Crimea and meddling in eastern Ukraine; Russia’s military intervention in Syria and support for the Assad government; Moscow’s alleged interference in the 2016 US presidential elections; Russia’s promotion of new institutional arrangements like the BRICS-led New Development Bank and the Eurasian Economic Union; and the pursuit of closer economic and diplomatic ties with China. This conference brought together a group of internationally renowned scholars to shed light on the underlying drivers of Russia’s new foreign policy activism. In addition, the conference aimed at discussing the implications of Moscow’s actions for the current international order.
