Project description

The international conference "Punishment as a Crime? Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Prison Experience in Russian Culture" was held at the UCRS on 15-17 August 2012.

This interdisciplinary conference featured three keynote lectures, as well as four panels consisting of a total of thirteen papers. The invited conference speakers came from universities and research institutes in France, Italy, Russia, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States. The papers presented a wide range of approaches and academic disciplines, including economic history, ethics, history, human geography, film studies, literature studies, gender studies, political science, psychology and sociology. The conference examined prison conditions in Russia, as well as various cultural representations of them, during the imperial, Soviet and post-Soviet periods. Some of the papers also compared prison experience in Russia with that of other countries. One of the keynote speakers, Dr. Igor Sutyagin, spoke of his own experience as a prisoner in Russia between 1999 and 2010.
