At the beginning of March the Institute for Russian and Eurasian Studies visited Shanghai International Studies University in order to establish official cooperation with the university as well as take in part in the appointment ceremony where our colleague Stefan Hedlund received the title of Honorary Professor.

On March 8 two representatives of the Institute for Russian and Eurasian Studies, Director Claes Levinsson and Professor Stefan Hedlund, paid an official visit to the Eurasian Studies Unit at Shanghai International Studies University located in Shanghai, China. Shanghai International Studies University (SISU) with its 10 000 students was founded in 1949 as the Shanghai Russian College and renamed Shanghai International Studies University in 1994. SISU is now a multidisciplinary comprehensive university with strong foreign language proficiency. The University has a School for Russian and Eurasian Studies as well as a Center for Russian Studies.

The aim of the visit was twofold: to sign a Memorandum of Understanding on Scientific Exchange between IRES and the Eurasian Studies Unit as well as take part in the appointment ceremony for Honorary Professor title that was conferred upon Stefan Hedlund, Professor of East European Studies at IRES. By signing the Memorandum both parties agreed to establish and conduct mutually agreed cooperative and collaborative projects, programs and activities, designed to enhance the development of scientific programs at both entities. The Memorandum opens following possibilities namely, exchange of academic staff for teaching on master and doctoral levels, exchange of students on master and doctoral levels, organization of joint events and research projects, supervision for master and doctoral students etc.
